What Are Anti-Reflective Coatings on Glasses?

Glasses reflect light. Once you start noticing it, it’s hard to stop, whether it’s the white flash across your lenses in a photo or the glow of a monitor bouncing back at you after a long day at your desk.

Anti-reflective (AR) coating is a thin, multi-layered treatment applied to both sides of a lens so light passes through it rather than bouncing off. Uncoated lenses send back roughly 8% of the light that hits them. Add AR coating, and that number drops below 1%, which is why it comes up so often when you’re choosing new lenses.

Anti-Reflective or Anti-Glare?

People swap these two terms constantly. Knowing the difference helps you ask for what you actually want.

Anti-glare usually points to polarization, the technology behind most quality sunglasses. Polarized lenses block the intense horizontal light that bounces off water, snow, or pavement.

AR coating works on the lens itself. It handles reflections that form on the glass sitting in front of your eye, like the ring of light around a streetlamp.

And yes, you can have both. Prescription sunglasses often come polarized with AR coating on the back surface, so light sneaking in from behind doesn’t bounce into your eye.

Where You’ll Notice the Difference

Reflections don’t bother everyone equally. They tend to show up most in a few everyday situations:

  • Driving at night, when headlights throw halos across your lenses
  • Working under overhead fluorescent lighting
  • Reading a bright screen in a dim room
  • Sitting with a window behind you during a video call

Night driving gets the most attention, and fairly so. Headlights scatter into halos, and your eyes work harder to sort out what they’re seeing. AR coating reduces that scatter so more of the light reaching your eye comes straight through the lens.

Screen time is the other big one. If your eyes feel tired after a few hours at a desk, reflections off your lenses might be part of it. Reducing reflections is one adjustment worth trying, along with sitting a comfortable distance from your screen.

Your Glasses on Camera

Camera flashes and ring lights hit uncoated lenses hard, washing them out and hiding your eyes behind a wall of white. With AR coating, the lens stays clear and your eyes stay visible.

It’s a small thing you’ll see constantly if video calls fill your week.

Cleaning Without Wearing Down the Coating

AR coatings hold up well, though how you clean them matters more than most people expect.

Dry-wiping is the habit to break. Grit on the lens gets dragged across the surface and leaves fine scratches. Wet it first, then wipe.

Keep the routine simple:

  • Rinse with lukewarm water before you touch the lens
  • Reach for a clean microfibre cloth instead of your shirt
  • Skip paper towels and tissues, which are rougher than they feel
  • Store your glasses in a case rather than face-down on a counter

How Long Does It Last?

A well-made AR coating is built to last as long as the lenses underneath it. When people replace coated lenses, the coating usually isn’t the reason. Their prescription changed.

Most adults update that prescription every 1 to 2 years. Clean your lenses properly, store them in a case, and the coating should carry you through that cycle.

Is AR Coating Worth Adding to Your Glasses?

Almost any prescription lens can take AR coating, though some materials benefit more than others.

High-index and polycarbonate lenses reflect more light than standard plastic, so reflections on them can be strong without a coating. Picking a thinner lens for a stronger prescription? Bring up AR coating in the same conversation.

Some coatings also filter blue-violet light, which may appeal if your days run long on screens. Certain versions include it by default.

The same decision comes up if you’re putting new lenses into frames you already own.
