Glaucoma occurs when high intraocular pressure causes progressive damage to the optic nerve in your eye. Because the disease develops slowly, without any initial symptoms, annual eye exams are the only way to save your vision from glaucoma.
There are no clear warning signs of glaucoma. The pressure in your eye slowly damages your optic nerve. The damage will gradually begin to affect your peripheral vision, but it usually happens so slowly that those with glaucoma are unaware until their vision has been permanently damaged.
It is almost impossible to detect glaucoma without an eye exam. During your annual eye exam, we will perform a variety of tests that measure your eye health. Our tests include measuring your eye pressure and testing your peripheral vision, as both are impacted if you have glaucoma. We will also carefully examine your optic nerves for signs of damage. With early detection, we can provide treatment to delay the progression of glaucoma and help save your sight.
There are different types of glaucoma, with slightly different characteristics. We will check for all types of glaucoma at your annual eye exam.
Open-Angle Glaucoma can only be detected with an eye examination. This type of glaucoma occurs when the eye’s drainage canals become blocked or when the eye produces too much fluid. The excess fluid increases the pressure in your eye and ultimately damages your optic nerve. Optic nerve damage presents as a gradual loss of peripheral vision, so by the time you notice a change in your vision the damage is often irreversible.
Normal tension glaucoma is different from other types of glaucoma because it occurs despite no increase in your eye’s pressure. Even without the change in intraocular pressure, damage to the optic nerve still occurs and results in vision loss. As with all types of glaucoma, your best defence is a regular eye exam every year.
Treatment for open-angle and normal tension glaucoma includes eye drops, laser surgery, or other types of eye surgery to reduce the intraocular pressure.
This type of glaucoma is the easiest to detect, but it is also the most severe. Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma happens when the angle between the cornea and iris becomes narrow or shuts suddenly, causing an increase in intraocular pressure. Signs of Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma include eye pain, blurred vision, red eyes, headache, nausea, and vomiting.
