Conjunctivitis (Red Eye)

Conjunctivitis or Pink Eye or Red Eye

Whatever you call it, they all mean red, puffy, sore eyes with discharge. If you think you or your child has conjunctivitis, we’re here to help.

Diagnosing Conjunctivitis

While the symptoms can be pretty disturbing, the cause of conjunctivitis isn’t usually obvious to the untrained eye. The origin of conjunctivitis will determine the treatment, so it’s important to get an official diagnosis. At your appointment, we’ll also make sure you don’t have a different type of eye infection, with more serious consequences, like scarring and vision loss. Book an appointment and we’ll get you back to healthy.

Viral Conjunctivitis

Viral conjunctivitis is extremely contagious and typically starts in one eye before quickly spreading to the other. Symptoms include redness, blurred vision, excess tears, discharge, itchiness, and light sensitivity.

Make sure to visit us for an official diagnosis, as certain types of viral infections can attack your cornea and cause permanent damage.

Similarly to other viruses like the flu, viral conjunctivitis can’t be treated with antibiotics. The best treatment is rest, drinking lots of fluids, and eating right. We also recommend that you wash any bedding or towels and dispose of makeup and contact lenses that may have come into contact with your eye to prevent reinfection. Also, stay home from work or school to keep from spreading the infection.

Bacterial Conjunctivitis

Bacterial conjunctivitis is the most contagious and most severe type of conjunctivitis. It can be caused by touching your eyes with dirty hands or a severe sinus infections. You’ll know you have bacterial conjunctivitis if you have redness, puffiness, and a thick yellow-green discharge. The discharge may be so copious you have difficulty opening your eyes in the morning.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by a bacterial infection and requires medical attention.

Like other infections caused by bacteria, we use antibiotics to treat bacterial conjunctivitis. Make sure to visit us as soon as possible to start your treatment. Because this type of conjunctivitis is extremely contagious, we recommend resting and avoiding work or school so you don’t spread the infection. Washing bedding or towels, and disposing of makeup and contact lenses that have come into contact with your eyes, is also recommended to prevent infecting others or re-infecting yourself.

Allergic Conjunctivitis

Like any typical allergic reaction, allergic conjunctivitis occurs when you come in contact with an allergen (like dust, pollen, or pet dander) and your body triggers an immune response. Symptoms usually include red, puffy, and itchy eyes and may be accompanied by other allergy symptoms like a runny nose and congestion.

If you know what caused your allergic conjunctivitis, the best treatment option is to avoid the allergen. For severe flare-ups, over-the-counter allergy medication can help relieve your symptoms.

If allergic conjunctivitis is a common problem for you, book an appointment so we can review your treatment options.
