Healthy eyes are paramount to your child’s development. Vision is crucial for learning, and annual eye exams from an early age are essential to catch vision issues early.
In Saskatchewan, annual eye exams are covered by Saskatchewan Health Authority for all children under 18.
Book your child’s eye exam today to ensure they’re seeing well into the future.
Your child should have their first eye exam at 6 months old. Early eye exams are the best way to diagnose and treat vision problems that occur during development. If left untreated, vision issues can cause challenges with your child’s reading, writing, classroom participation, concentration, and athletic ability.
The majority of classroom learning is visual, which means children who can’t see well can’t learn well. Children with vision problems struggle to read the whiteboard and understand their lessons. It is difficult for children to express that they are having difficulties seeing and most assume that all children see what they see, so the best way to make sure your child is seeing well is with an annual eye exam.
Myopia, or near-sightedness, is the inability to see distant objects clearly. It typically develops in childhood and continues to progress as children age. Children with myopia will be able to see and read up close, but will likely have trouble reading the whiteboard in school or seeing the television. During their eye exam we check for myopia and if necessary, correct it by prescribing glasses or myopia control.
While your little ones might be apprehensive about a visit to the optometrist, an annual eye exam is nothing to be afraid of. Children’s eye exams typically take less than an hour and are tailored to their developmental level. During the appointment, we’ll make sure your child is completely comfortable while checking for vision problems that commonly present in childhood like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye turn), colour vision deficiency, and myopia (near-sightedness).
While annual eye exams for children are covered by the province of Saskatchewan, certain visits or treatments may need to be paid for by your insurance provider. We are happy to offer direct billing for the following providers:
