If you’ve experienced an injury to your eye or you’re experiencing sudden pain or vision loss, contact us immediately to help prevent permanent sight loss. All emergency eye care visits are covered by the province of Saskatchewan, including follow-up visits. Eye emergencies that require immediate care include:
If you experience any of the eye emergencies listed below, take these initial steps and then seek professional medical attention.
Any chemical that comes in contact with your eye needs to be flushed immediately to prevent continued damage. Find a source of cool, clean water and flush your eye for at least 15 minutes. It is important to continue for at least 15 minutes to remove all traces of the chemical, even if your eye begins to feel better.
After 15 minutes of flushing your eye, seek professional medical help.
The cornea is the clear, thin front surface of the eye. It is very delicate and can be easily scratched or damaged. If you experience a corneal abrasion or scratch, do not rub your eyes.
Rubbing your eyes can move debris around and cause further damage. Instead, gently rinse your eye with cool, clean water and then seek professional medical help.
If a foreign object has entered your eye, do not rub your eye or try to remove the object with tweezers. For objects that sit on top of the eye like an eyelash, makeup, or pet hair, gently flush your eye with cool, clean water to try and dislodge the item before seeking medical attention. If the object is embedded in your eye, do not attempt to remove it. Instead, seek immediate medical assistance.
Seek medical help immediately if an object like glass or metal has entered your eye.
